  • Canton Reference 2.2 Official Launch

Posted on May 5, 2010 by Paul

Looking at the Canton Reference website, there is a teaser of Tomorrows official launch of the NEW Reference 2.2 speaker - which looks to be a scaled down version of the flagship Reference product.

We will be heading out to Munich for the High End Society show and will bring back photos and info from this exciting release.

Utilising a trickle up design from the Canton Vento series of loudspeakers, the Reference Series are truly phenomenal. We are sure it is the painstaking research that goes into making a world class speaker such as this, that allows Canton to produce some of the Worlds best speakers at the more affordable end of the spectrum, including the Chrono SL Series and the excellent Movie Packages such as the Canton Movie 80CX.

  • XiVA musicm8 vs a PC or mac for CD ripping and storage

Posted on March 7, 2010 by chris

A question we get asked a lot about the XiVA musicm8 is "Why should I buy it instead of just using my PC?"

Well there are a number of reasons so it only seems right to make a list:

    1) Simplicity

The musicm8 must be the most simple way to rip your entire CD collection available today - simply insert your disk and it will find the album art and track info from a range of databases (instead of just one like iTunes) and file each song by artist and album title.

    2) Speed

The XiVA only needs about 3 minutes to rip each disk because of the clever software that it uses. An exact error corrected .wav file is created and your disk is ejected ready for the next to be inserted. The musicm8 can then store the .wav file or convert it into MP3 or flac or both. This process happens in the background so that you can already be ripping your next disk while the last is still encoding....try doing that in iTunes.

    3) Convenience

The musicm8's best party trick is the fact that it can duel encode every track, we recommend MP3 AND flac, this means that you have a high quality uncompressed version of each song for use with your Hi-Fi and a smaller file to add to your iPhone. Never listen to compressed music in your home, and don't fill your iPhone with large uncompressed files...Perfect.

    4) Access your music from anywhere

The instructions provided with the XiVA musicm8 have a step by step guide to set it up as a server that you can access from anywhere in the world. If you at at your friends house party and don't rate the music, or sitting in a hotel the other side of the world and missing home - simply log-in and enjoy your entire music collection.

    5) Green credentials

The XiVA has been designed as a music storage solution that will be left powered on 24/7 365 days a year. This means that it uses less energy than having your noisy PC running just so that you can access your music.

    6) It works with Everything*

Out of the box, *the musicm8 works with everything we have tried it with so far, from Sonos multi room systems, Lynn DS, Xbox 360, Sony PS3, Logitech Squeeze box, Ruko SoundBridge and every other uPnP streaming device you can imagine.

    7) Can sound even better than a CD player

When listening to a CD through a conventional CD player, it has to read the data in real time. The XiVA musicm8 has the ability to slow down the reading process if your CD is dirty or scratched. This means it will still be able to retrieve data that might be lost be a normal CD player. Any choice of Digital to Analogue converter can be used due to the compatibility of the XiVA so the sky is the limit for output quality, we recently heard it outputting wirelessly to a Naim DAC via a Sonos system and it sounded as good as any CD player we have heard under £10,000!

  • Canton Chrono SL 580 review

Posted on March 7, 2010 by chris

Having now spent a month in our demonstration room, it's time to post some thoughts on the Canton Chrono SL 580 that have only being swapped out for the more expensive Vento's for specific demonstrations.

First of all, they look absolutely stunning. The diamond polished aluminium trim rings set against the piano quality High Gloss black cabinets, let you know that these speakers have been designed with no expense spared. The look alone is worth the asking price, simple as a piece of furniture to match todays high gloss flat screen TV's and amplifiers.

So if these speakers look so good, how do they sound.... quite simply superb.

Sharing the same advanced technologies as the Canton Vento range, we knew the Chrono's would sound good but we were still shocked by how good they really are. Out of the box, the sound slightly lacked mid-range, but we expected that as it is typical until the speakers have run in for a while.

Fast forward 24 hours and they certainly aren't the same speakers as the day before and have started to open up considerably - anybody who says speakers don't change much as they run in are... umm... well wrong. This isn't just a Canton thing though - I distinctly remember my old Dynaudio Focus 140's were very nearly sent back as damaged in transit and they took over a week of running 24/7 before I could even bare to be in the same room as them.

Once run in, the sound from the Canton Chrono SL 580's is fast and dynamic, revealing details that much more expensive speakers leave on the record. The most noticeable thing about the Chrono's though is the imaging and centre stage. Vocals are pinpoint accurate, with every single instrument receiving it's own clear space and definition, even through the most complex pieces.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice by Dukas, a piece we often use to evaluate new equipment, was as dynamic as we have ever heard - the deepest notes flowing effortlessly from the downward firing bass port without a hint of the bass boom that can plague other floorstanders. The leading edge of every note was clean and crisp providing immaculate timing, rendering everybody that hears them unable to stop their foot from tapping along to everything played.

After a week of being on dem, we had listened to 100's of tracks between us - from Sam's early favourite early swing LP's with Gene Kruppa and Benny Goodman to Chris's favoritte King's of Leon and Foo Fighters tracks and every thing in between. The Chrono's do it all, and do it well, so if you are in the market for a new pair of speakers and can afford the very modest price tag, these have to be on your "to hear" list.

  • Canton Vento 870 DC's first impressions

Posted on March 6, 2010 by chris

I've had a few days with the Canton Vento 870 DC's and I have to admit I love them. The first thing you'll notice about this high end speaker is the looks! They are quite simply stunning. The black gloss finish looks fantastic next to my Pioneer TV. The only problem is that the black does have a habit of attracting dust! If your happy to run a cloth over these speakers every week or so, you'll love them.

Being a high end speaker you would expect the 870 DC's to be able to blow you away with every type of music. I've played everything from Holst The Planets, Pink Floyd, T'Pau from the 80's (China in your hands sounds great) to modern rock. I'm yet to find a weakness in these floor standers. They have an incredible ability to bring the music to life and fill your room with energy. For you Audiophiles out there you will know what I mean. When you hear music of this quality and this energy, it gives you a special feeling inside! That is exactly what these speakers do. They get you excited, they bring out you emotions, they take you through the emotions of the music.

Maybe I'm getting a little carried away with this test. The next job on the list is to try the Vento 870 DC's with a number of different amps. It's a hard job . . .

  • Bristol Sound & Vision Show

Posted on March 3, 2010 by chris

It was great to see Canton showing the Reference 7.2 speakers at Bristol this year. The system was using the XiVA musicm8 as a source and streaming it wirelessly over to a Niam Dac.

While we were in the room they were playing a fantastic version of "Somewhere over the Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole a Hawaiian musician. Every ounce of emotion was conveyed by the system and everybody else in the room fell silent to listen to his amazing vocals.
